A blaze broke out at the 3M plant in Knoxville, IA Tuesday afternoon, forcing workers to evacuate, news broadcaster KNIA reported.

Crews were sent to the facility at 3:30 p.m. and arrived on scene to find thick dark smoke and a fire burning outside the building, officials told the radio station. Firefighters worked to prevent flames from reaching the structure, which holds solvents and cardboard.

After the initial fire was doused, fire personnel put out flames in a container of solvents, KNIA said. The vessel also possibly contained an unknown chemical. Power and the chemical supply for one building at the site was cut to allow 3M staff to look for damage.

No injuries occurred, according to the broadcaster. Several other area fire departments and emergency agencies also responded to the incident.

Opened in 1975, 3M’s 500,000-sq-ft plant in Knoxville manufactures pressure sensitive tapes and adhesive products used in industrial, consumer, construction, and automotive applications, according to information on the firm’s website. The facility supports five 3M divisions.
